Why We Need to Rethink How We Prepare for Birth

There is a moment in every woman’s life when she crosses a threshold. A sacred threshold. A moment when the woman she has known herself to be begins to soften, expand and transform into someone new.

For many women, this threshold is motherhood.

We spend so much time preparing for the arrival of a baby. We research the prams, the sleep routines, the feeding choices, the birth plans, the hospital bags and the nursery spaces. We gather information about how to care for this precious new life that is coming earthside.

But somewhere along the way, we have forgotten to prepare for the woman who is being born alongside the baby.

Who prepares the woman for the emotional, psychological and spiritual transformation of becoming a mother? Who holds space for the identity shift, the surrender, the vulnerability, the grief, the joy and the deep remembering that happens when a woman crosses from one version of herself into another?

Because birth is not only the moment a baby enters the world.

Birth is also the moment a mother enters.

And that transformation deserves to be witnessed, honoured and supported.

When I became a mother, I discovered something I had never been prepared for. My birth experience did not unfold in the way I had imagined it would. After a cascade of interventions, I found myself carrying emotions I never expected to feel; frustration, grief, guilt, confusion and a deep sense of needing to understand what had happened.

I loved my baby fiercely. My love was immediate and undeniable.

And yet, somewhere inside me, I knew that my own experience mattered too.

Nobody had told me that you could feel grateful and still feel hurt. Nobody had explained that you could love your baby completely and still need healing from the way they arrived. Nobody had spoken about how a birth experience can live within a woman’s body, heart and nervous system long after the moment itself has passed.

Nobody had spoken about the importance of integration.

It took me time to understand that I wasn’t simply processing a birth.

I was processing a transformation.

I was learning how to honour the woman I had become.

Across cultures and throughout history, the great transitions of life have been recognised as sacred rites of passage. Birth. Coming of age. Marriage. Death. Rebirth. These moments were never meant to be entered alone. They were witnessed by community, held with reverence and honoured as the profound crossings that they are.

Yet in our modern world, many women step into motherhood without the village, ceremony or support that once surrounded these sacred thresholds.

We prepare women for the mechanics of birth, what their bodies might do, what choices they may have, what interventions may occur, but we often forget to prepare them for the deeper journey.

The identity shift.

The relationship changes.

The surrender of control.

The moments where they look at themselves and quietly wonder:

Who am I now?

Motherhood is not simply an addition to who a woman is. It is an initiation. A shedding of an old self and the emergence of something new.

And every woman deserves support as she crosses that threshold.

One of the most important things we want women to know is that there is no single way to have a meaningful birth experience.

Birth may unfold physiologically.

Birth may involve interventions.

Birth may be a caesarean.

Birth may look exactly as planned.

Birth may take a completely unexpected path.

The way a baby enters the world does not determine the worth, strength or power of the woman who births them.

A positive birth experience is not about perfection. It is not about achieving a particular outcome or meeting someone else’s idea of what birth “should” be.

It is about feeling informed.

It is about feeling respected.

It is about feeling supported.

It is about knowing your voice matters and that your experience is worthy of care.

Because a woman’s body was never designed to be a machine.
It was designed to be a compass.
A compass that carries wisdom. A compass that guides her through seasons of change, endings, beginnings and becoming.

When we created The Integrated Birthing Journey™, we wanted to bring together the pieces that are so often separated. The physical, the emotional, the mental, the spiritual and the practical.

We wanted to create a space where women are not only prepared for the birth of their baby, but supported in the birth of themselves.

Through the wisdom of midwifery, holistic practices, birth education and the understanding of birth as a powerful rite of passage, we honour the whole woman.

Because preparing for birth is not only about learning what your body may do.

It is about understanding who you are becoming.

To the woman preparing for motherhood…

You do not need to know everything.

You do not need to control every moment.

You do not need to have the perfect birth story.

But you do deserve support.

You deserve education.

You deserve a space where your questions are welcomed, where your fears can be spoken and where your transformation is honoured.

You deserve to feel connected to yourself as you welcome your baby.

And to the woman carrying a previous birth story…

Perhaps your baby arrived safely, but a part of you is still carrying questions.

Perhaps you have wondered why you cannot simply move on.

Perhaps there are feelings you have held for years because you never had the words, the space or the support to process them.

Your story matters. Your experience matters. Healing does not mean changing what happened.

It means creating compassion for the woman who lived through it. It means returning to yourself with tenderness. It means honouring the woman who crossed that threshold and acknowledging all that she carried.

It is time for a new conversation about birth.

Not only asking:

“How was the birth?”

But also asking:

“How was your experience?”

“How did you feel?”

“Did you feel supported?”

“Did you feel heard?”

“How did you change?”

Because when a baby is born…a mother is born too.

And every mother deserves to be witnessed, supported and honoured as she becomes…
